How Much Auto Insurance Do I Need in Illinois?

Illinois requires drivers to carry at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, plus $20,000 for property damage. Illinois also requires at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in uninsured-motorist bodily injury coverage.

State minimums may not be enough. A single serious accident involving medical treatment and a newer vehicle can exceed those limits, and any amount above your liability limit is generally your responsibility. That's the reason we walk through higher limit options with almost everyone we talk to.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage matters too. It's the coverage that responds when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough of it, and higher limits are available above the state requirement.

A personal umbrella policy is another option worth understanding. It can add liability protection above qualifying auto and home policies, subject to eligibility and the insurer's underlying-limit requirements.
